What are stem cells?

Stem cells represent the building blocks of any living organism, which have no designated purpose, like all the other cells in the body. The cells forming the liver are all they will ever going to be – liver cells. The same goes for every other part of the body, including skin, heart, bones, the nervous system and so on. Stem cells, however, are not specialized. Their sole purpose is to serve as blank pages, where the DNA will write the cellular information, giving them a specialization.

All the cells in our body have evolved from stem cells which means that, in theory, stem cells may serve to grow organs and other body parts in laboratory conditions. And, as it seems, this is the direction medicine is currently heading.

How many types of stem cells are there?

In every Bay Area stem cell clinic, there are generally three types of stem cells being used:

  1. Embryonic stem cells

These are harvested from in-vitro human embryos (embryos developed in laboratory conditions rather than the female’s uterus), and it is believed they are the most potent of all. Embryonic cells are called pluripotent – they can serve as raw material for the formation of every other type of human cell.

  1. Somatic stem cells

Are also called adult stem cells, tissue-specific or non-embryonic stem cells and, compared to the embryonic ones, these are specialized. They only form tissues similar to those they originate from. They are rarer and more difficult to extract than the first ones.

  1. Induced pluripotent stem cells

As the name suggests, these are artificially engineered by altering the nature of the somatic type and force it to behave like the embryonic one, for a plus of flexibility.

Scientists have also identified another type called mesenchymal stem cells, but there is still a debate whether these are actual stem cells or some other type.
